Dear Sirs,

Subject: Long-Term Strategy for the Sustainable Development of Cyprus “Vision 2035”

First of all, we would like to congratulate the Cyprus Council for Economic Affairs and Competitiveness on its intensive and methodical work toward creating a Long-Term Strategy for the Sustainable Development of Cyprus, “Vision 2035.” Nevertheless, we have noted with disappointment that the arts and culture sectors are completely absent from the strategic planning. If the primary objective of “Vision 2035” is to establish a comprehensive strategy for charting Cyprus’s development path over the next 15 years and maximising the well-being of Cyprus’s citizens, then the arts and culture cannot be left out of this strategy.

Cultural institutions and organisations form the backbone of Cyprus’s cultural life and make a substantial contribution to citizens’ quality of life and education. Nevertheless, over time, Cyprus has consistently received among the lowest levels of state funding in this sector compared to other European countries. Apart from a few funding programs from the Ministry of Education and Culture, there is a huge gap in the development of policies and initiatives to effectively support Cyprus’s cultural institutions.

We consider it extremely important and urgent:

  1. to include the arts and culture sector as a distinct sector in the state’s long-term strategy.
  2. Organise a public consultation and give us the time to prepare concrete and practical proposals that could be added to the 200 proposals that have already been prepared.

We look forward to your positive response toward the creation of a truly holistic “Vision 2035.”
