On Friday, 7 July 2023 at 7:30pm, you are kindly invited to the NeMe Arts Centre, Limassol, Cyprus for a talk by our European Media Art Platform (EMAP) resident artist Paul O’ Neill.

Extending his ongoing work focusing on Ireland’s complex relationship with the many multinational tech giants, Paul O’ Neill will be presenting the research he conducted in Cyprus during his residency at NeMe. This will encompass questions and ideas concerned with digital sovereignty, Internet of Military Things technologies, neutrality, and other related themes. He will be presenting an overview of the research and practice undertaken where he has been documenting the communications infrastructure of Cyprus, situating its current aspirations as a regional tech hub within wider geo-political concerns and colonial legacies. This research has developed into a series of in progress art works in collaboration with artist and filmmaker Frank Sweeney which includes we are all going to make it, an experimental video; and a ‘counter-map’ of Cyprus’ internet infrastructure. Both the works, and the research that informs them, offer a critique of techno-solutionism and delusionism in both Cyprus and Ireland while asking how networked technologies can be used in a way that is sustainable, transparent, and resilient.

Paul O’ Neill is an artist and research fellow at the ADAPT Centre for AI-Driven Content Technology, University College Dublin.

His practice and research are concerned with the implications of our collective dependency on networked technologies and infrastructures. He has exhibited and presented his work at various cultural institutions and events including Science Gallery (Dublin), Ars Electronica festival (Linz), and Inspace (Edinburgh) and his writing has featured in publications from the Institute of Network Cultures (Amsterdam) and ANNEX – Ireland representative at the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale.
