The Abraaj Capital Prize 2009

Recognised curators from any nationality are invited to submit one or more proposals for separate exhibitions with individual artists currently working in the Middle East, North Africa or South Asia. Each successful proposal will receive up to $200,000 to include production costs, transport and travel for both curator and artist. Included in the budget will be a fee of $15,000 for the curator.
The final exhibitions will be shown at Art Dubai in March 2009.

A Unique opportunity for international curators to work with artists from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia

The Abraaj Capital Art Prize is designed to raise awareness of innovative and experimental work being created by artists working in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. As well as providing international recognition, the prize will provide the opportunity for artists to work alongside established international curators and to show individual exhibitions of their work in Art Dubai 2009. By working with a curator, it is hoped that each successful artist will be able to develop their work through creative collaboration whilst widening their international reputation. Additionally, a work from each artist will form the basis of a corporate collection, that will over time reflect the changing concerns of art practice in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia.

Applications may only be submitted by curators with the joint signature of the artist. Curators must submit a biography and curriculum of past exhibitions plus three written articles. In addition, each curator is asked to write a short proposal for the work of the artist in the submission, and the reasons why they wish to work with the nominated artist.

Nominees must be practicing artists currently living and working in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. There is no age restriction. Each artist will be expected to keep a record of the development of the artistic process.

The Role of the Curator

As a collaborative process the curator will be expected to produce a record of the ideas and development of the exhibition and guide the design and content of the final catalogue.

Application forms must be received by 5pm, Sunday 15h June 2008.
A selection committee will meet and the successful applicants will be notified in mid-July.
