Triple Canopy is pleased to announce its second annual call for proposals. We will be commissioning projects spanning the six areas outlined below – original research, new-media journalism, public programming, Internet-specific artwork and literature, and critical dialogues – to be published in the magazine and presented before live audiences between July 1, 2011, and June 30, 2012.
Now in our 18th year, The Chicago Underground Film Festival exists to showcase the defiantly independent filmmaker. Our mission is to promote films and videos that experiment in form, technique, or content and to present adventurous works that challenge and transcend expectations… if you suspect your film is “underground,” it probably is.
In the era of networked technology, we appear to live in an integrated global community where human relations and perceptions are conceived through various manifestations of a non-physical world of connections. We collectively build and spontaneously find refuge in virtual communities whose inhabitants experience incongruity and fragmentation, along with conformity and wholeness. The interplay of physical and virtual within our lived experience opens up portals and wormholes enabling simultaneous and discontinuous realities at the touch of a button, echo of a voice, or nudge of a sensor. The new dynamics not only reconfigures our relations with ourselves and with one another, but most importantly, it reshapes our sense of identity, belonging, and place.
Voies Off Prize 2011 Call for applications For the past 16 years, Voies Off has offered an alternative approach to emerging contemporary photography, its particularities, its evolutions, and its areas of resistance.
As a festival and platform to showcase film, video and new media, Courtisane makes a resolute choice for adventure and reflection. Courtisane’s programmation constitutes a kaleidoscopic mosaic of styles, media, gestures and emotions that share an insatiable hunger for experimentation, a personal signature, and a sense of resistance. Courtisane has been organizing a yearly festival since 2002.
The Contemporary Art Center of Thessaloniki, part of the State Museum of Contemporary Art, focusing on the promotion of new media and contemporary art techniques, organises the Animacall project scheduled for Spring 2011.
Within the framework of the 7th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art in 2012, curated by Artur Żmijewski, artists from all over the world are requested to send in their artist material for a research investigation, following the conditions below.
What was design? Design was the nineteenth-century child of Western art, architecture, and the crafts. It centred on the creation of industrially produced, mobile objects that moved freely within the global market. The designed object functioned as the aesthetic, technological, and economic focal point of the 20th century. As its movement provided the fulcrum of monumental shifts in power and imagination, it was the symbol, image, tool, and agent par excellence of modernity.
At the height of the 2009 economic crisis, the first edition of MADATAC (Muestra Abierta de Arte Audiovisual Contemporáneo) came as a salutary shock. Based on the interchange of experience and know how, MADATAC is a unique and inclusive springboard for cutting edge audio-visual art; this year it’s back… and stronger.
The exhibition, motivated by the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus, aims at a critical self-examination and look upon the place and its people.

The World Festival of Animated Film in Zagreb is traditionally the second oldest festival in Europe. In the course of its thirty-year-old history it has systematically been following world animation production through a number of films in competition and out of competition. Built on the tradition of the Zagreb School of Animation, Animafest, the festival oriented towards auteur film, has made a reputation of being one of the most significant events in the domain of animated film.
Curatorial project Stomper is currently looking for moving image, video works, animations, short films, and documentaries that explore notions of fear. Entitled “Whistling in the Dark” we are looking for innovative filmmakers and artists who explore the many guises that fear takes.
Three Sound-Art Projects will be awarded a prize by BROADCASTING ART. The works will have to include reference to all the aesthetic, narrative and technical aspects involving the use of the new technologies, both digital and analogical, from a contemporary point of view and with an avant-garde approach.

EMAF is one of the most influential forums of international Media Art. As a meeting point for artists, curators, distributors, galleries and an audience of experts the festival has a great impact on the topics and aesthetics of Media Art. Each year the festival offers its visitors a current overview of experimental films, installations, performances, digital formats and hybrid forms, ranging from personal and political subjects or formal experiments to provocative statements from the pulsating area of “Media Art – Society”. The Festival sees itself as a place of experimentation and a laboratory where extraordinary works, experiments and ventures are created and presented.
In computational photography, camera and picture-taking are perceived as concepts that can be modified in do-it-yourself spirit and are therefore open to discussion, redefinition, and hacking. This artistic approach to the field differs from how the term is understood in the photographic industry where the focus is on features that serve typical photographic purposes.
