Critical Networks of Care

What do we mean when we speak of care in relation to art and media? At first glance, care seems much more relevant to ethics rather than aesthetics, to interpersonal relations rather than systems of communication. Simplistic views thereof tend to equate it with acts or feelings of compassion, affection, protection, or healing. Care, nevertheless, is a much more involved discipline of thought, emotion, and practice and much more fundamental to our societies. This anthology does not seek to offer a single definition of care. Instead, it assembles a plurality of practices through which care becomes thinkable and actionable. Together, these contributions invite us to understand art and media not only as vehicles of expression or communication, but as practices capable of sustaining the complex ecologies upon which collective life depends.
