The political events of 2015-2016 witnessed the rise of far and alt right politics in many countries including the US, the Philippines, and various countries in the EU. This shift reveals a dissatisfaction with the currently long established political parties but also with what appears to be an increasing inability to imagine a better, more egalitarian, and safe future.

On Friday, March 24, 2017 NeMe invites you to (b)orders, a screening of two videos by Tony Maslic and Aron Rossman-Kiss followed by, talks, discussion and drinks at the NeMe Arts Centre.

11th Gwangju Biennale

In light of the art sphere’s focus on infrastructure in many parts of the world, in the treacherous terrains of existing public and private systems, art itself seems to be partly forgotten. At GB11, attention is directed to artworks and projects addressing the agency of art in terms of the question, “what does art do?” A central part of this interest in the performative aspect of art is its projective and imaginative qualities-art’s active relationship to the future. Other concerns of GB11 include the mediation of art: art’s embeddedness in various contexts and the potential of connecting dots between already existing activities and people near and far.

Today, art workers around the world are struggling to contextualize their practice in a period marked by human rights, labour, and anti-war campaigns, on the background of an ever violent and oppressive global climate. They are trying to reconcile their artworks, texts, exhibitions, projects with a desire to act politically in line with these campaigns by blurring the lines between artistic, non-artistic and political activist types of work. Their strategies have taken the form of non-violent actions directed at the museum and gallery system, the art market and even at local governments.

Iconoclastic Controversies: Artist Tours

Nico Carpentier will be present for the duration of the Iconoclastic Controversies exhibition to discuss his research on the statues and commemoration sites in the southern regions of Cyprus. Carpentier’s research on the country’s historical sites is part of his research interest in dominant and alternative discourses in relation to conflict and war that structure political realities. Previous research on these matters has been carried out in Belgium, the Czech Republic, France and other European countries. Simultaneously, he has been looking into alternative ways of communicating research, using mixtures of textual and visual languages to convey academic analyses.

 

11th Shanghai Biennale

After extensive recommendations and careful selection by members of the PSA Academic Committee and the 11th Shanghai Biennale Academic Committee, the Indian artist/curator group Raqs Media Collective has been appointed the chief curator for the 11th edition of the Shanghai Biennale, which will be open on November 11th 2016 until March 12th 2017 at the PSA.

 

3rd Istanbul Design Biennial

3rd Istanbul Design Biennial will be held from 22 October to 4 December 2016. The curators Beatriz Colomina and Mark Wigley announced the concept of the 3rd Istanbul Design Biennial at a media meeting held on Tuesday, 1 December in the Istanbul Archaeological Museums Library.
