In Transition Russia 2008

In 1989, Carole Kismaric published the book “Forced Out: The Agony of The Refugee In Our Time,” which was also a monumental travelling exhibition. It was a most effective reflection on displaced persons, integrating images and text that gave testimony to the aftermath of famine and war at that time. The exhibition was composed of larger than life photographs of displaced people printed on film so that not only was the viewer dwarfed by the images and text, but the transparent images produced haunting slightly moving shadows on the wall behind the hanging film. The impact of the work was all the more palpable because of the inclusion of text by people who experienced a cataclysm.

PIXXELPOINT 2008 - International New Media Art Festival

How the media change the way we imagine / represent / honour / curse the divinity

Whether we like it or not, spirituality has shaped the evolution of the media, and in turn has been amply influenced by it. Two of the most effective technological brand identities, the Big Brother symbol and the Second Life logo, are blatantly inspired by the divine eye. “God games” are among the most popular videogames, and our passion for high tech gadgets is akin to idolatry. The total absorption commanded by videogame playing, right down to the position adopted by players, is our new form of prayer.

The 4th Bucharest Biennale under the curatorship of Felix Vogel

Felix Vogel chose as theme of research for BB4 Handlung. On Producing Possibilities. BB4 takes the ambiguity of the German term “Handlung” – that is impossible to translate in all its levels of meaning, but it is somehow located between action, activity, agency and participation, but at the same time it could also mean story or even narration – as a starting point to examine diverse practices, which are proposing various forms of action. BB4 attempts to scrutinize and to exhaust the promise – that might just be a supposition – of art taking place in the public sphere and is it thus creating possibilities for (political) action or does the artwork itself has already inherited this moment of action? Therefore, the exhibition rather tries to articulate questions and suggests different prospects than to formulate answers. The biennial aims to intensify the interaction with the urban and political context in Bucharest by inviting participants, coming from different fields like arts, architecture, politics, anthropology etc.
