Hybrid City 2015

Art Funding and Politics

From the 2nd to the 30th of November 2011, NeMe founders Helene Black and Yiannis Colakides moderated the thematic discussion in the -empyre- list Art Funding and Politics.


ISEA 2011

The panel will present and dis­cuss issues re­lated to this topic cen­tral to their collaborative re­search as par­tic­i­pants in the NeMe initiated project Through the Roadblocks which was first presented in May 22, 2009 at the e-Mo­bi­LArt con­fer­ence dur­ing the Thes­sa­loniki Bi­en­nial.



Cyprus became independent in 1960 and this independence was imposed upon the community inadvertently by other vested interests, resulting in inter-communal violence between Greek and Turkish Cypriots breaking out in 1963 and culminating in a Turkish invasion in 1974 at which time the two ethnic communities were forced into a divide. Consequently, Cypriot art has been informed by the events of this political landscape and artists consciously made art particular to their respective community’s political view. So Herzog’s question of “whose society” is a most relevant posit. Being trapped within a war and post war environment, video in Cyprus did not exist in the 70’s with the first experiments by a few artists being conducted during the 80’s when video, as a medium, was used to mainly document art performances. Up to this period video and television were mainly employed to articulate political events.


2nd Subversive Festival

Instead of asking the obvious question “Is the idea of communism still pertinent today, can it still be used as a tool of analysis and political practise?” one should ask the opposite question: “How does our predicament today look from the perspective of the communist idea?” (Slavoj Žižek, First as Tragedy, then as Farce)

Rencontres Internationales 2009

From June 30 to July 5, the 19th “Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin/Madrid” will create a space of discovery and reflection between new cinema and contemporary art in Berlin at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt.



Responding to an invitation by the e-MobilArt organisers NeMe representatives delivered a talk on the collaborative aspects of our NGO.



From documentary and guerilla video to story telling, from traditional animation, to compositing, to machinista and from optical and kaleidoscopic to algorithmic visualizations, video has come a long way since the early experiments with the medium in the 60s and 70s. This small selection of works crosses video genres to create a narrow spectrum of some of the medium’s possibilities. The constructed (animated) or manipulated (using compositing) moving image is the common thread linking the video works.



Isolomania expresses an interest in the mechanisms of social exchange as defined by particular cultural values. This event aims to raise issues and questions regarding the place of art in our contemporary reality especially the newly acquired EU identity and its relationship to the idiosyncratic local. By exploring the ambiguous space between that inhabited by established concepts and norms of Europe and their relationship with ideas from the small ‘periphery’ of Cyprus, a space is created which could potentially resonate as a ‘generator of new understanding’. It is the interaction of both these spaces which has the potential to generate fusions of new relationships, which may emerge within the context of time, and thus turn our gaze to a more consummate translation of the dynamics of our present reality.



The thirteen videos created for “IDEODROME 2006, Limassol: people and passages” and “IDEODROME 2007, invisible spaces” were presented in a single, one hour screening at the Municipal Arts Centre in Nicosia, on Friday the 25th of January 2008, 8.30pm.
