Pixxelpoint 2009

We keep on talking about “new media,” while in actually fact these media are anything but new. The Net is twenty years old, if we start counting from the advent of the Web, forty if we start from Arpanet. Spacewar!, the first videogame ever, is more or less the same age. Virtual worlds are the updated, lighter versions of a technology acclaimed as “the future” when Second Life programmers were still in diapers; social networks are the bastard sons of Fidonet. As for the computer, it is younger than Lord Byron, but certainly not than his daughter Ada.

Screengrab : Intervention

Increasingly we live in a world which is marked by boundaries and difference. Our actions are categorised and labelled for reference, sign posting and evaluation.

Intervention is the new catchcry of these troubled times and no one is immune whether it be remote indigenous communities, Wall St bankers, tropical forests, the built environment, economies of the state, small gatherings in shopping malls, subliminal advertising, ISPs, online discussion forums or pop cultural sites like YouTube and the Sopranos.

Polar Identity

Global climate change has far reaching ramifications, the world as we know it will not be the world of 100 or perhaps even 10 years. Armed with a “new” awareness of how our actions impact the environment, how will this effect our ideas of ourselves? Polar Identity challenges us to take on a new perspective, one that can be both pragmatic and optimistic what is the fallout from new trade routes and passage through a once ice-blocked mass. How will these changes affect cartography, international relations, Easternization, religion, communications, etc. The new perspective upends the world, but what does it mean for the Southern hemisphere?
