Mesaoría

Mesaoría is a compound of multiple creative disciplines around performance – sound, video, light, and body create the configuration of one extensive live installation within the NeMe Arts Center. It refers to an area in central Cyprus situated between the mountain chain of Pendaktylos and Troodos, and it is a place signified by the crossing of the Green Line.

The work itself exhibits the process of land cultivation and farming on a private land inside the buffer zone. As a magnifying glass, it reveals the silence found in the restricted area, the sound of its nature, and the nearest city’s echo.

The venue is transformed into recorded experiences from daily visits to this land that have been archived to develop an interdisciplinary setting. The artist, influenced by his unconventional military past, which extends into this day, criticises in his work how militarism on the island functions as a distancing force against the vulnerability of the in-between.

*The work was developed within the framework of Moving The New, Dance House Lemesos’ residency and project development programme, with the contribution of mentors Rodia Vomvolou (dramaturgical feedback), Vasilis Peteinaris (lighting), and Pedro Barreiro (artistic feedback and performance development).
