On 8 December 2017, the art exhibition “Participation Matters” opens in the NeMe Arts Centre (NAC), in Limassol. On display are 14 art projects of the Respublika! project, curated by the Belgian professor Nico Carpentier. On the same day, 8 December, the one-week Respublika! Festival will start. During this Festival week, 15 different events will take place in Limassol and Nicosia, combining film screenings, artist’s talks, workshops and performances.

Respublika! is an art project that wants to engage in a discussion on democracy and participation. It uses two strategies. It gives the floor to artists who want to reflect themselves on what democracy and participation means in today’s world. And it highlights a series of participatory art works, where artists work together with ordinary (and not so ordinary) people to produce art.

The curator, Nico Carpentier, who has lived and worked in Cyprus says: “This exhibition, and the festival, gives all visitors a wonderful opportunity to see how complex and wide-reaching democracy is, and how there are so many different ways of involving and empowering people.”

The Respublika! exhibition “Participation Matters” will open on 8 December 2017, with a reception at 8pm, and will run until 19 January 2018. The Respublika! Festival will start on 8 December 2017, and will run until 16 December 2017.

Respublika! is supported by the Cultural Services of the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture, Medochemie, Sheila Pinkel, Free University Brussels (VUB), Uppsala University, Cyprus Community Media Centre and Home for Cooperation.
