“…The present age (…) prefers the sign to the thing signified, the copy to the original, fancy to reality, the appearance to the essence (…) for in these days illusion only is sacred, truth profane.
Ludwig Andreas Feuerbach, Preface to the second edition of The Essence of Christianity, 1843
“…In societies where modern conditions of production prevail, all of life presents itself as an immense accumulation of spectacles. Everything that was directly lived has moved away into a representation…”
Guy Debord – Society of the Spectacle,1967
“The image can no longer imagine the real since it is the real. It can no longer dream reality since it is virtual reality. From screen to screen, the image has no other destiny but the image. (…) Reality has been driven out of reality, and has left us in a hyper-reality empty of meaning.”
Jean Baudrillard – Paroxysm: The Perfect Crime, 1993
This year’s Ideodrome explores the relation between reality and its representation. Between real life and what appears on all kinds of screens that surround us. Between what does take place but remains off screen and what never happens but appears on our screens as reality. A mental journey in this grey area that imposes itself between the real and its reflection.
Ideodrome is in its third year. As in the previous years, all videos are exclusively created for Ideodrome and presented in public for the first time and as always, the venue is held at the end of the old pier in Limassol. Our main goal is to create original videos. Not just a collection of videos, but the result of a time consuming collective and simultaneously personal work of seven Cypriot artists who have been invited to participate in the project. Each one approaches the common theme with his/her own point of view and means of expression and focuses on specific details of the theme.
Ideodrome showcases video works created by artists from various disciplines such as the visual arts, animation, graphic arts and film-making. Working with the video medium is their common characteristic. There are no limitations regarding the form of each video work. It can be based on a visual concept, it can be an experimental film, it can be narrative or non-narrative, dramatised or documenting, animation, poetry, video dance, an architectural video study, none of these or all of these at the same time. The only common factors are the digital image and sound technology, and for the purposes of “Ideodrome 2008,” its common theme: Off Screen.
