The UK’s first Asian Art Triennial (ATM08) opens 5 April – 1 June 2008 in Manchester and is conceived by Shisha, the UK’s premier international agency for contemporary South Asian crafts and visual arts, in partnership with Castlefield Gallery, Cornerhouse, Chinese Arts Centre, The International 3, Manchester Art Gallery and Manchester Metropolitan University (through MIRIAD and the Faculty of Art & Design).
The inaugural ATM Programme in 2008 will echo Manchester’s strong political and social history, reflect new artistic practice and seek resonances between Manchester and Asia, by exploring the notion of “protest” in its widest sense.
The theme of protest is being used as a starting point for a wide variety of new commissions and the selection of work by artists from a range of Asian countries that have never been shown in the UK before. Through the ATM08 framework devised by Shisha, each of the partner venues is curating their own show and choosing how to engage with this theme through their choice of individual programme, selection of artists and work.
