The Vilem Flusser Theory Award (VFTA), initiated in 2008 by transmediale in collaboration with the Vilem_Flusser_Archive of the University of Arts, Berlin (UdK) promotes innovative media theory and exemplary research into digital culture. The VFTA seeks work exploring current and pending positions in digital art, media culture and networked society, including outstanding and significant work which may be produced outside traditional academia. Echoing media philosopher and cultural nomad Vilem Flusser’s unique investigative, cross-disciplinary and analytic approach, the Award is a call to reflect upon, to act and to challenge the rapidly changing technological and societal conditions that underpin the contours of digital culture. The call is open to publications, positions, and projects from a broad range of theoretical, artistic, critical or design-based research that seek to establish and define new forms of exchange, vocabularies and cultural dialogue. Entries from countries and regions in which research into digital art and culture are emergent are especially encouraged.

Nominees of the VFTA will notified in mid October 2010, and the Award Winner will be announced in Berlin at transmediale.11 on Saturday February 5, 2011.
