Artists from all countries are invited to submit proposals for temporary site-specific sculpture installations that raise awareness of “Nature, Art & Life.” Works must be suitable for an urban nature park with an emphasis on wetlands conservation and environmental education. Artists selected for the 2010 Festival will create their artworks during a 3-week residency in Taiwan, April 4 – April 26, 2010, with the public opening participation on weekend April 24 and 25. The time frame to create the installation will be 19 days, and artists must have their works completed by the Press Conference Opening on Friday, April 23. The selected artists will receive a fee of NT$60,000 (about US$1,800), a round-trip economy airfare from their home country to Taiwan, accommodations from April 4 – April 25, some meals provided and assistance from volunteer to create and complete their works.
The Selected artists will create their works at Guandu Nature Park (outdoor and indoor) using sustainable natural materials found on site such as reeds, rice straw, earth, small stones, branches, and some small bamboo as well as recycled bamboo. The park also collected lots of driftwoods. Artists are welcomed to use this new material to design and create a nature installation if they prefer. The artworks should be made by nature materials and last for at least the full 4 months of the exhibition and should survive from potential typhoons, heavy rains as well as hot and dry summer weather. Artists will design the installation as a semi-permanent artwork, the Guandu Nature Park reserves the right to keep the installation after the 2010 Festival. The artworks will act as opportunities for public interactions and appreciation. The artists are encouraged to work with volunteer to share ideas. A symposium and opening conference will take place during the work period. The artists will be expected to participate in the public interaction during the opening weekend on April 24 and 25.
Yang, Chun-Sen, a well-known contemporary Taiwanese artist, will be the curator for the 2010 Guandu Sculpture Festival. Mr. Yang has a special gift in creating and observing sculpture, earth art and environment art displace.

Proposals must be submitted by e-mail and should include the following materials:
- Resume or curriculum vitae should include the mailing address and contact information of the artist. The artist’s website and e-mail address is preferable in relation to the consideration for the entries.
- 6 images of previous outdoor works that should be related to nature and the environment (small jpg files up to 1 MG each.)
- Image list must give the title, date made, dimensions, media or materials used, place of the installation and brief description of each work.
- Based on the theme of “Nature, Art & Life,” the artist should write a one-page descriptive proposal to express his/her artistic concept, material use, technical process and interaction to support the proposed project.
- Sketch or render the proposed work (scanned or digital image up to 1MG) and include proposed dimensions and materials.
Guandu Nature Park
Guandu Nature Park is situated in northern Taiwan at the junction of the Danshui and Jilong Rivers. The landscape consists of a mosaic of freshwater and brackish ponds, mudflats, marsh, rice paddies, and woodland, inhabits by a rich variety of organisms. Guandu Nature Park covers 57 hectares divided into the Main Area, Core Reserve Area, Outdoor Observational Areas, and Sustainable Management Area. Facilities are primarily of crude boardwalks, bird-watching blinds, and interpretive structures.
Over 830 species of animals (including birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, mammals, bristle worms, snails, crustaceans, and insects) and 200 species of plants have been recorded at Guandu. 229 species of birds have been observed to date, qualifying this wetland as an Important Bird Area (IBA) recognized by Bird Life International.
About the 2010 Guandu International Outdoor Sculpture Festival
Guandu Nature Park, located in Taipei City, holds this festival form 2006. This international festival is one of the few exhibitions that combine art with environment issues and try to raise the public awareness.
This year, we will present the 2010 Guandu International Outdoor Sculpture Festival: Focus on “Nature, Art and Life.” Opening on April 24 and 25, 2010, and closing on August 29, 2010. Selected artists will come to Guandu to create site-specific installations using natural materials and focused on nature and the environment and the issue of “Nature, Art & Life.” The Sculpture Festival will include public activities with the artists on the opening weekend and additional public activities during the four months of the exhibition.
