International Curatorial Training Programme
De Appel is a centre for contemporary art, located in the heart of Amsterdam. Over the 25 years of its existence it has been operating in an international network of art centres, museums and other exhibition spaces. In the projects and exhibitions that have been realised, as well as in publications and public talks that were organised, the different ways and contexts in which contemporary art can be presented have been a recurring item for discussion and reflection.
The aim of this course is to bridge the huge gap between the day to day practice of making exhibitions and the theoretical background that is offered during academic art history studies. It ranges from the development of an idea, to inviting artists, producing new work, installing a show and making a publication.
As an art centre of long-standing reputation, De Appel provides a perfect opportunity for the participants of the course to be in close contact with all aspects of realising exhibitions and related activities.
The following parts of the programme are considered to be of vital importance:
- the opportunity to meet a large number of artists, curators, critics and other professionals from the Netherlands and abroad in a very condensed period of time, and having the chance to exchange ideas with them, often in a very informal way
- the possibility to make several short excursions in Europe. During each programme the destinations of these trips differ: this depends on the international exhibitions that are worth visiting, the interests of the participants of the course and the relevance of the journey with regards to the final project of that course
- the opportunity to realise a presentation as a group, for instance in the form of an exhibition. The parameters given are: a specified budget and the requirement that the presentation reflects the group’s / participants’ view on developments in contemporary art. Considering the quality of the proposals presented, one or a combination are chosen to be realised.
Candidates are invited to apply by writing a letter, in which they explain their reasons for wanting to attend the programme and what they expect from it. Along with this, candidates should submit a proposal for a project. A full c.v. is required, in which an extensive description of one’s relevant working experience is included. Two written (in English or with English translation), references of (former) tutors, professors or employers, are also required.
On the basis of the submitted documents a pre-selection is made. Approximately ten candidates will be shortlisted; they are invited to come to Amsterdam for an interview with an international selection committee, consisting of museum directors, curators and artists.
Please send your application to the De Appel address and put it to:
the attention of Esther Vossen.
Candidates are expected to have a degree in Art History, or to have finished their studies at an art academy, and have a considerable knowledge of art history. Candidates are also expected to have experience in working in an arts institution (museum, Kunsthalle, gallery or other organisation). A basic knowledge of all practicalities connected to realising an exhibition / project is required.
The candidate’s ability to speak and write English fluently is a prerequisite . If the ability to express oneself in English is considered to be insufficient, we will strongly advise candidates to follow an intensive course before the start of the programme.
The participants in the programme pay a subscription fee of €2500,-. During the course De Appel pays for relevant travel costs (in the Netherlands and abroad), hotel expenses and entrance fees to exhibitions and museums. Costs for housing and living in Amsterdam are covered by the participants themselves.
De Appel can not offer grants or scholarships. We strongly advise candidates to consider and investigate all possible ways of financing their stay in Amsterdam and their attendance of the programme, even before they are admitted. The amount required for living expenses of the seven months in total would be – depending on one’s personal needs – approximately €6500,- including rent.
