Starts prize 2016

On behalf of the European Commission, Ars Electronica hereby issues an open call for entries to a competition that will determine the first recipients of STARTS, prestigious and – with two €20,000 grants – highly endowed awards. Expressly encouraged are innovative projects at the interface of science, technology and art.

Iconoclastic Controversies: Artist Tours

Nico Carpentier will be present for the duration of the Iconoclastic Controversies exhibition to discuss his research on the statues and commemoration sites in the southern regions of Cyprus. Carpentier’s research on the country’s historical sites is part of his research interest in dominant and alternative discourses in relation to conflict and war that structure political realities. Previous research on these matters has been carried out in Belgium, the Czech Republic, France and other European countries. Simultaneously, he has been looking into alternative ways of communicating research, using mixtures of textual and visual languages to convey academic analyses.

11th Shanghai Biennale

After extensive recommendations and careful selection by members of the PSA Academic Committee and the 11th Shanghai Biennale Academic Committee, the Indian artist/curator group Raqs Media Collective has been appointed the chief curator for the 11th edition of the Shanghai Biennale, which will be open on November 11th 2016 until March 12th 2017 at the PSA.

3rd Istanbul Design Biennial

3rd Istanbul Design Biennial will be held from 22 October to 4 December 2016. The curators Beatriz Colomina and Mark Wigley announced the concept of the 3rd Istanbul Design Biennial at a media meeting held on Tuesday, 1 December in the Istanbul Archaeological Museums Library.

9th Biennale de Montréal

La Biennale de Montréal is pleased to announce the appointment of Philippe Pirotte, Director of the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste Städelschule and of Portikus in Frankfurt am Main, as Curator of its 2016 edition.

10th Taipei Biennial

The Taipei Fine Arts Museum has appointed French curator Corinne Diserens as guest curator for the 10th Taipei Biennial. Titled Gestures and archives of the present, genealogies of the future: A new lexicon for the biennial, the biennial is scheduled run from 10 September 2016 to 5 February 2017.

32nd Sao Paulo Biennial

The 32nd edition will focus on notions of “uncertainty” to reflect on the current conditions of life and the strategies offered by contemporary art to harbour or inhabit uncertainties

SeMA Biennale Mediacity Seoul 2016

Sharing the “post-museum” vision of Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA), SeMA Biennale Mediacity Seoul is a recurring international survey of contemporary art, with a focus on media art and other art forms that pertain to the concept of media. Founded in 2000, Mediacity Seoul has reflected the city of Seoul as a center of media art and technology, and expanded the identity of Seoul Museum of Art.

3rd Aichi Triennale

The man-made objects currently on the furthest expeditions from the Earth are space probes launched by the United States. Space probes Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, both launched in 1977, carry a metal disk known as a Golden Record, which contains greetings in 55 languages, music from many different cultures, as well as sounds and images sampled from nature.

Liverpool Biennial 2016

Liverpool Biennial 2016 will unfold through the landscape of the city. It is organised as a story narrated in several episodes: fictional worlds sited in galleries, museums, pubs, unused spaces, stations, hotels, parking lots, shops and supermarkets. For the first time children will work together with artists and the Biennial team to develop ambitious exhibitions, projects and publications specifically for young audiences.
