About NeMe
NeMe (pronounced neem) is a non profit, non government, Cyprus registered cultural association founded in November 2004. NeMe works on two platforms – a virtual and an itinerant one – and focuses on contemporary theories and their intersection with the arts.
NeMe’s itinerant platform, the IMCA (Independent Museum of Contemporary Art) presents NeMe projects which include, exhibitions, project InForm, performances, new media events, lectures, workshops and archives. The form of the IMCA is determined as a practice or process by the nature of each project with the notion of the exhibition “space” being constantly revised and redefined.
NeMe’s virtual platform resides in two websites:
neme.org provides a service by publishing critical texts and filtered cultural information which includes arts news, calls and a selection of reBloged information from the web. A forum is also offered and openness for public discussion is encouraged. A concise list of latest entries for these is maintained here.
neme-imca.org documents NeMe’s off line activities.
A list of links of all entries in the NeMe network can be found in our sitemap
The founders of NeMe are Helene Black, Yiannis Colakides and Konstantinos Sophocleous. NeMe currently has 30 members.
NeMe Aims
- art is a living process and acknowledging this, NeMe aims to create independent projects within an interdisciplinary terrain involving a more integrated and comprehensive action to issues.
- to promote a dialogue between contemporary Cypriot arts (including and not limited to, new media, visual and applied arts, architecture, science and technology, literature, critical theory, poetry, dance, theatre, music) and national/international emerging forms.
- to acknowledge that the cultural features of Cyprus do not have their origins in a single source and as such ethnicity will not be considered.
- NeMe aims to operate a critically determined approach respecting the characteristics of individual practices. NeMe is not aiming for a homogenising of disciplines, professions and ideologies.
- NeMe aims to challenge and broaden the public’s sense of multidisciplinary contemporary cultural exploration creating a context for unpredictability, impetus and interest.
- to foster an exchange capable of transforming creative works into voices and collaborative actions and thus reshape perceptions.
- to explore structures of social change by investigatng contemporary language and technology based art disciplines as structures of social interaction.
About this site
This site is NeMe’s first major ongoing project and has been on line since 27 February 2005.
